Russell's Eyes

I thought I'd write a quick little post about Russell's eyes for friends and family that are wondering, "Are those glasses his or are they just for show?"

Corde and I have kind of been in the dark recently because we've been told different things about Russell's vision. We finally received some clarifications based on MRI results and I am glad to have some peace of mind, knowing what Russell's dealing with.

Russell has Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. His optic nerves (the nerves that send signals from his eyes to his brain) didn't develop normally, resulting in limited vision. He has ONH in both eyes, but much more in his right eye. He CAN see, but until he can communicate with us, we won't know the extent of his vision loss.

Russell was prescribed glasses to protect his left eye. We don't want to take any chances with his left eye because without it he'd practically be blind.

Aside from ONH, Russ has Esotropia and Nystagmus, both being somewhat mild and worsening at different times of the day. I don't feel like explaining those things, so you can just let wikipedia tell you by clicking on the links.

If you ever see Russ in person, you'll probably noticed that his head is usually tilted to one side and that's because it helps him see better. It's pretty adorable.

So no, I don't just put Russell in glasses because It's cute. (But seriously, It's REALLY cute)
